When Should You Visit a General Physician?

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

In India, the default approach to health is reactive rather than proactive. Most people visit a doctor only when symptoms become unbearable — when the fever will not break, when the pain is too intense to ignore, or when a family member insists loudly enough. This delayed approach is understandable given the cost and inconvenience of medical visits, but it often means that conditions which could have been caught early and treated simply have progressed to a stage requiring more complex and expensive intervention.

Learning to recognise the signs that warrant a medical visit — and understanding the value of routine check-ups even when you feel fine — could quite literally save your life.

Signs That Require an Immediate Visit

Certain symptoms should never be ignored or self-treated. If you experience any of the following, schedule a doctor's appointment within 24-48 hours:

  • Fever lasting more than 3 days: While most viral fevers resolve on their own, persistent fever can indicate bacterial infections, dengue, typhoid, or other conditions that need medical treatment. In India, where dengue and malaria are endemic, fever should always be taken seriously.
  • Unexplained weight loss or gain: Losing or gaining more than 5% of your body weight without changes in diet or exercise can signal thyroid disorders, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, or other underlying conditions.
  • Persistent fatigue despite adequate rest: If eight hours of sleep still leaves you exhausted, something deeper may be going on — from anaemia and vitamin deficiencies (extremely common in India) to thyroid issues or even depression.
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath: These symptoms always warrant prompt medical evaluation. While not every chest pain is a heart attack, it is critical to rule out cardiac causes, especially if you are over 35 or have risk factors.
  • Blood in stool, urine, or cough: Any unexplained bleeding from any part of the body needs medical evaluation to determine the cause.
  • Persistent digestive issues: Chronic acidity, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea lasting more than two weeks may indicate conditions ranging from food intolerances to more serious gastrointestinal concerns.
  • Persistent headaches: Headaches that are new in character, increasing in frequency, or accompanied by visual changes, nausea, or neck stiffness deserve a professional assessment.

The Value of Regular Check-ups

Even when you feel perfectly healthy, your body may be quietly developing conditions that show no outward symptoms in their early stages. High blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol levels, and vitamin deficiencies are all "silent" conditions that can progress for years without symptoms — until they cause serious damage.

Adults over 30 should have an annual health check-up that includes, at minimum, blood pressure measurement, fasting blood sugar, a complete lipid profile, and thyroid function tests. This basic panel catches the most common conditions affecting working-age Indians and costs a fraction of treating these conditions once they advance.

Making the Most of Your Doctor's Visit

Prepare for your appointment by noting your symptoms, their duration, and any patterns you have observed. Bring a list of all medications and supplements you take. Be honest about your lifestyle — diet, exercise, sleep, stress, alcohol, and smoking — as these details help your doctor form an accurate picture.

Early detection saves lives, reduces suffering, and costs far less than late-stage treatment. Do not wait for a crisis. Schedule your routine check-up today.
